You could be forgiven for thinking that an experience like this is unattainable for most humans! But Blue Safari has created one of the most unique experiences on the island that mixes dreams with reality. You read it right, and you can explore the depths of the Indian Ocean, witnessing breathtaking personal views of the underwater world.
Blue Safari has over 25 years of underwater excursion experience and has been established since 1998. Founded, in part, by Luc Billard, a former competitor in the Round the World Yacht Race, the business has gone from strength to strength. Luc, himself raced in 1977-78 and has truly emulated his passion for the ocean by offering unique accessibility to others. From the initial offering of a submarine open to up to five passengers, Blue Safari has progressed to offering multiple sea ventures in different vessels. The beauty of the Indian Ocean is serene as it is mysterious, and Blue Safari can provide a distinctive perspective from a Mauritius viewpoint. The Indian Ocean is famed for its marine life, though seldom navigated by most people. The beautiful turquoise waters allow for crystal-clear navigation by an expert team, allowing passengers to ascertain phenomenal views.
Such is the beauty underwater that proposals have been made, and even honeymooners attend the Blue Safari services for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. With a fleet of nine different vessels accommodating a variety of sea excursions, Blue Safari has an expert team of sea people. If a submarine in Mauritius was not enough, there is also the option for sub-scooters! This mind-boggling experience submerges two passengers up to 4m in turquoise waters, enabling up close and personal views of marine life. Wow.
You may find it interesting to know that this is the only service of its kind in the Indian Ocean and one of the very few submarine leisure experiences in the world. Blue Safari has two submarines, each with its own identity and story.
The first is BS600, a five-seater submarine with jaw-dropping viewpoints from a large window in the front. At depths of up to 35m, the BS600 is a fine vessel that allows private rental to consolidate experiences. The close-knit environment enhances the essence of being submerged with family or friends. Able to travel to reefs for uninterrupted views of coral and marine life, the BS600 astounds passengers.
The second is the BS1100 piloted by Barnabe Valeran and Damien Legallant. These chief pilots take groups of up to ten people to sea for views from individual windows. At 7.5m long, the BS1100 easily cruises through the underwater for a smooth ride along to various sites, including the Star Hope wreck. In 1996 this Japanese trawler was voluntarily sunk to serve as an artificial reef at 36m depth. Now, the trawler is teaming with marine life, including eels and turtles.

Blue Safari’s submarine experience in Mauritius is located off Trou aux Biches, a village on the northern coast. During peak summer seasons, it can be a little busier than usual due to the increased levels of tourism in the North of the country.
The Trou Aux Biches area is known for its beautiful white sands, turquoise waters, and snorkeling reefs. The village is quaint but also frequented during the day by tourism as travellers seek one of the most stunning beaches on the island. Known for the first major hotel, opened in 1971, Trou Aux Biches has come a long way from being the 19th century fishing village it was. Residents at the infamous Beachcomber Golf Course are known for partaking in the unique submarine experience, as the proximity is within minutes’ walking distance. Locally you will find several boutique stores, restaurants, and local supermarkets to fuel up before your excursion.
Prices vary based on the excursions one may want to partake in.
The prices range from $50 – $900 depending on the service sought.
We have used Tripadvisor, Reddit, and Google to ascertain a scoring for Blue Safari. The consensus is that the experiences offered at Blue Safari are incredible. The 4.5/5 rating with over 1000 verified reviews on Google attests to the quality and service of the team of over fifty people.
For some reason, everyone forgets to offer one of the most important things when travelling – food! Well, we know Trou aux Biches a little and will recommend a great option to compliment your submarine experience in Mauritius.
One of the most renowned places in the village is La Plage by Evaco, a beautiful restaurant serving European and bar food. The burgers and pizzas are tremendous. If you are looking for somewhere with a bit of a taste of Europe outside of the traditional Mauritian cuisine, you have come to the right place. The restaurant has also spent time at the top of the rankings on Tripadvisor for its culinary delights.
